Spread Some Extra Love this Holiday Season

by | Nov 13, 2024 | Leadership, Relationships

We believe there’s never a bad time to give and show love to others, but it feels especially right to do so around the holidays. There’s something special about spreading a little extra love during the most heart-warming holidays! By the end of this blog, we hope to have prepared you to show that extra love this holiday season, and even into the next year and beyond. Love has the power to heal, so let’s get to healing!

Focus on what matters most.

Shopping for gifts, preparing festive meals, and making plans with family and friends are all part of the fun around the holidays! However, they often overshadow what truly matters during this time: the opportunity to give and show love. The holidays provide a unique time to remind ourselves and others that love is what connects us all, and it doesn’t have to be grand gestures or expensive gifts. Sometimes, it’s the small, thoughtful actions that spread the most warmth.

Start with gratitude.

One of the easiest ways to show love is by expressing gratitude. The holidays are a time of reflection, and it’s the perfect opportunity to let people know how much they mean to you. Giving someone a thoughtful call to check in, mailing them a holiday-themed card with a kind handwritten message, or even sending a nice text is a great way to show them how thankful you are to have them in your life.

Think about the people in your life who’ve helped you grow, supported you, or made you smile this year. Whether they’re personal or professional relationships, they deserve to be nurtured. Show them that you don’t take their presence for granted. Gratitude is contagious, and when you share it, you encourage others to do the same.

Listen and be present.

With distractions all around us and right at our fingertips, we often underestimate the power of being present. This holiday season, instead of focusing on material things, make a conscious effort to be there for the people you care about. Sit down for a heart-to-heart conversation, play a game with the kids, or just spend quality time together. Your attention is one of the most meaningful gifts you have to offer. Listening without distractions shows that you value the person in front of you, which is a powerful way of spreading love.

Act with kindness.

Random acts of kindness are another wonderful way to spread extra love during the holidays. They don’t have to be grand gestures to have a grand impact. Consider:

  • shoveling snow for a neighbor
  • buying coffee for a stranger
  • volunteering at a local charity

Small acts of kindness have a tendency to start a positive chain reaction. They remind people that goodness exists and encourage them to pay it forward. Plus, the joy you feel from giving without expecting anything in return is sure to brighten your holiday season as much as the recipient’s.

Show empathy and compassion.

The holidays aren’t always joyful for everyone. For some, they are a time of stress, loneliness, or grief. That’s why it’s important to practice empathy and compassion. Reach out to those who may be struggling. Sometimes, all it takes is a simple “I’m thinking of you” to let someone know they’re not alone. If you’re in a position to offer help, do so. Here are some great ways for you to help someone in need:

  • Offer a listening ear
  • Run errands
  • Invite someone to join your family’s holiday dinner
  • Help prepare a meal or bring one over
  • Offer to wrap presents for them

They may be small gestures, but they mean a lot and are sure to help lighten someone’s load during this holiday season. If that doesn’t feel like enough, here are some more unique ways to show you care.

Give heartfelt gifts.

When it comes to gift-giving, people often default to the commercial side of things—buying the latest gadget or the most expensive item on sale. But giving thoughtfully, from the heart, is a way to show genuine love. Consider gifts that have meaning, like something homemade, personalized, or something that aligns with the recipient’s interests or needs. Thoughtful gifts don’t have to break the bank, and they show that you’ve put time and effort into showing that person love.

Continue spreading extra love, well past the holidays!

While the holidays provide a special opportunity to focus on love, it’s important to carry that energy forward into the new year and beyond. Love isn’t seasonal; it’s a practice that should be cultivated all year long. Keep checking in on people, keep performing acts of kindness, and keep spreading positivity wherever you go. The small, consistent ways we show love add up and create a lasting impact that reaches far beyond the holiday season, and well beyond our lifetimes.

In a world that sometimes feels chaotic or divided, love is the glue that holds everything together. By making a conscious effort to spread a little extra love this holiday season, you not only make the world a brighter place for others, but you also uplift your own spirit. Love is powerful—it heals wounds, mends relationships, and brings people closer together. So, let’s get to healing, one act of love at a time. Speaking of acts of love, in one of our previous blogs, we put together ten fall traditions to create with your family! And isn’t creating something together an act of love on its own?
